LAGUNA FP LTD is a UK based company that specialises in the development and manufacture of ‘unique’ angling products – Ethical, Assistive and Mainstream Technologies.
Chris Wilson (a life long angler and design engineer) is the Founder & Chief Executive Officer responsible for setting the overall direction and product strategy for the company.
Chris was float fishing one day with a young friend on the Leeds and Liverpool canal back in the early ’80s when it occurred to him that many improvements could be made regards bait and tackle. His experience as an angler and product designer inspired him to suggest that he was “the right man for the job” and so it was that he decided to one day set about improving things.
Like many anglers who are often sat there waiting for a bite, he began to let his mind wander but this time; instead of taking in the beauty of the sights and sounds before him, started to think of the company what might one day become a reality. Of course as a simple pleasure angler, he had no idea of the industry in general, in fact the only contact he ever had with the trade was calling in to the local tackle shop for a chat when picking up a pint of maggots or a float. Remember this was the age prior to the internet so he only knew and heard of a handful of celebrities he’d read about in books; plus the likes of Bob Nudd from reading the Angling Times and Bernard Venables of Crabtree fame.
That short (almost fish-less) session had proved to be one of the most inspiring days of his life. Almost fish-less because while depth finding amongst the supermarket trolleys he caught a carp of 18lb (his first) not by design exactly because his target was roach – on a single white maggot on a size 18 no less with 3lb line right at his feet!
The carp was a fluke but where had it come from? How long had it been there in the canal? It’s of no real importance but it’s always intrigued him how such a big fish ended up on his hook on the L&L.
In truth the idea of forming a company wasn’t the original plan, the whole idea was to concentrate on developing just one product that day… an intelligent float to rival all floats – one that finds its own depth amongst the hidden debris that would equal or better Polaris for both shallow and deep swims in all types of water – a working prototype was made within six weeks and it worked beautifully and it cocked straight too!
After undertaking countless thousands of hours researching and studying the industry, bait and tackle, it was several years later that Chris (after being diagnosed with a life-threatening illness) finally took stock and refocused his research efforts and formed LAGUNA FP LTD in 2010 (Laguna being Spanish for lagoon) with its first product: Aqua-SPAWNTM which Chris had developed a couple of years previously.
“Sometimes things take an unexpected twist” says Chris; and Aqua-SPAWNTM took precedence to that of the ‘intelligent float design’ partly because of the fact that most anglers fashionably now float fish shallow commercials instead of deeper waters like reservoirs and big pit quarries but also the idea of fishing ‘legally’ with a realistic embryonic SPAWN variant of the real thing in the UK was just to good an opportunity to ignore… “maybe one day we’ll see a revival and we’ll develop and market our float”?
Making things easy for anglers is what LAGUNA are about, be it catching fish, using simple tools or protecting our environment. Although a lot of what the company does is complex and has a solid scientific grounding; the products themselves are practical, easy to understand and use. “That’s the essence of what we do here and we’ll follow that same ethos wherever possible, it’s what differentiates us” says Chris.
Formed in 2010 LAGUNA now enjoys the established capability and expertise of in-house Manufacturing of Bait and Accessories in the UK, Wholesale, R&D, Concept Design, Branding, IP Protection & Licensing of its technologies.
LAGUNA also owns the brands; Pristex and Bait Bunker (wholly owned subsidiaries) which Chris heads as our new Chairman.
