About John Newman
John has been fishing for 46 years and is keen to explore and develop new baits particularly for winter chub.
I am primarily a barbel angler on the lower river Nene around the Peterborough area but around this time of year start to turn my attention to chub.
I am a member of Peterborough & District Angling Association (PDAA). As well as the waters covered by the club book I have access to the Elton and Wellington Fisheries through syndicated membership. Elton holds the Nene record barbel. The Wellington fishery is a new stretch to us this season and something of an unknown quantity but initial catches suggest this will be a superb chub water.
The majority of my fishing is on the Castor Backwater which has been featured in the angling press on numerous occasions. Last year I caught the second largest recorded barbel and chub from this water. This section was the benfeficiary of an Environment Agency (EA) habitat improvement scheme two years ago and I am one of a group of anglers that feedback catch data that enables the EA to monitor their work.
Amongst my friends are some other dedicated chub anglers (including a member of the Chub Study Group) and we are currently trying to develop new paste recipes for our winter chub fishing. Laguna products are definitely some that I intend to explore and use more in the future.
